In Golden Mean Geometry numbers are approached philosophically for their 'qualities' rather than as 'quantities.' One and Two are treated as the beginning or marriage and, thus, the ancients considered Three to be the first real number. The 3, 4 and 5 are of prime importance symbolically and geometrically and are the basis for the five Platonic solids. I decided to use these three numbers in repeating sequence to hold the geometric energies of my series and to represent the three astrological modalities of Cardinal (3) (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), Fixed (4) (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) and Mutable (5) (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). The three modalities (generative, formative and regenerative) times the four elements create the twelve individual signs of the Zodiac.

In naming my art 'Symbalas' I have acknowledged their foundation in symbols and mandalas, a profound, ancient symbol for wholeness and unity. They draw you in and encourage you to ride the waves to source and participate in the adventure of interconnectedness. They speak of universal processes and the wonders of the creative force.

Each Symbala is accompanied by a short verse intended to be a verbal complement to its distinctive visual energies.
